What is Seersucker?



A woven cotton fabric that is lightweight, breathable, dries easily and doesn't wrinkle, making it an excellent fabric choice for the Spring and Summer months. Traditionally, seersucker is a striped cotton with alternate stripes crinkled in the weaving. You can tell if a fabric is true Seersucker by looking up close for a true texture, a pucker in the stripes of the fabric. 



Why is it called Seersucker?



Seersucker originates from the Persian words "shir o shekar," meaning "milk and sugar", a resemblance of the smooth and rough stripes to the smooth surface of milk and bumpy texture of sugar. 



Why do we love it?

 

Growing up in the South, women are surrounded by seersucker. Men in seersucker suits are everywhere in the Spring and Summer months. But women don't have many options, until now. We love seersucker- It's lightweight and doesn't wrinkle so no iron is needed and it's the Southern answer to humdity. 

During Jolie's years at BCBG, she'd speak of the need for more Seersucker dresses, but they weren't having it. So she decided to design her own. Who better a woman born and raised in the South, anyway?  Even better, all of our Seersucker dresses are manufactured in the South.

When are we "supposed" to wear Seersucker? Are there rules?

 

Generally, Seersucker is to be worn from Easter until Labor Day. Some even wait until Memorial Day to begin wearing Seersucker. There is something quite special about waiting until Easter Sunday to break out your favorite Seersucker dress, it signifies Spring and it's warm weather has officially arrived.

How do I know if it's "real seersucker" or not?

If the fabric doesn't pucker, it isn't seersucker.
